On Sunday, May 28th, the Oakland Volunteer Fire department participated in Oakland's Memorial Day services.

The day started out with the Department holding our annual Memorial Day service at our memorial in front of Company One. The names of members who have passed away were read by our Chiefs and a bell was rung after each name was announced.

After the memorial service the entire Department participated in the Oakland Memorial Day Parade and ceremony at Veterans Park.

This year's Parade Grand-marshal was Tony Lechniak, a WWII Marine veteran who fought at the battle of Iwo Jima. One of the toughest battles of WWI, the fight to take Iwo Jima lasted from February 19th to March 26th of 1945. Nearly 7,000 were killed, along with over 19,000 being wounded.

The OVFD wish to thank all of our Service Men and Women who bravely served, and continue to serve, the United States at times on conflict as well as at times of peace. We are fully indebted to you for your bravery and selflessness and thank you for the freedom you help to protect.

And we also celebrate and thank all the members of the Emergency Services who put their lives on the line in service to our local communities as well.
